About us

Spin Academy was founded in Mumbai in November 2000. In February 2001 Spin Academy expanded its horizons by starting classes in Nasik and Devlali and it was here that the first live shows took place, with students performing along side their professional teachers.

As well as teaching thousands of students, the academy has always nurtured its instructors and assistants, many of whom started out as beginners themselves. Thus, Spin was able to expand under the expert eye of Akash Karnatki and his dedicated team. Since those early days in Nasik Spin Academy has given classes, workshops and professional performances in Baroda, Surat, Kanpur, Hyderabad, Gwalior, Pune, Kalyan, Mount Abu, Jodhpur and Ahmedabad. The rave reviews supplied by local and national media are always equaled by the glowing praise received from students, whether absolute beginners or experienced dancers.

Spin Academy has now evolved to offer a huge range of services. In fact, the versatile nature of the classes means the academy is able to meet the needs not just of class students but corporations, schools, colleges, clubs, television, film and fashion companies across India and abroad. With such a shining track record and unbeatable team of professionals Spin is able to make almost any idea a reality.

Jazz

Jazz dance is an American form of dance that developed in the early 1900’s as both African and European peoples began to mix their dance traditions. Africans focused on rhythms and torso movement and Europeans on musical harmonies, folk and social dances. Jazz is essentially the father of all dance styles. The movements that characterize this form are very isolated, staccato and linear.

Jazz dancing is energetic and fun, consisting of unique moves, fancy footwork, turns, leaps and dance technique. Jazz is often seen in musicals and has as many different styles as teachers. Jazz dancing is a forn of dance that showcases a dancer’s individual style and originality

Hiphop

Hip-hop dance derives its roots from a blend of East Coast and West Coast dance styles of the 1970s and 1980s. These dance styles were different, but similar in rhythmic style. From East Coast b/boyin and Brooklyn uprocking to West Coast locking and popping grew the dance style we now know as hip-hop. This blend of East and West Coast dance expresses roots from African, martial arts, street and folk dancing, which shine through in today's hip-hop, according to Davey D's Hip Hop Corner.

Across the United States from the ‘Boogie Down’ Bronx, New York to the ‘Beat Street’ corners of Compton, California, young people everywhere took to this new style of dancing that included such feats as breaking, popping, locking, gliding, ticking, vibrating and krumping. In the earlier days, some hip hop dance moves such as the Humpty Dance were made popular by hip hop artists who had created the songs from which these dances were derived.

Hip-hop emphasizes rhythm with a strong beat and the poetry of movement. Steps mostly move in a vertical direction. This form should be very stylized and enigmatic.

A "street" style of dance often seen in music videos.  It is a less technical and high-energy style of dance that is done wearing street clothes and sneakers.

Salsa

Salsa dancing is a dance style associated with the salsa style of music now popular worldwide. Salsa music has its origins sometime in the 1950's to 1970's, with the truly distinct salsa style coming out of New York in the 1970's. The music fuses a number of Cuban styles, particularly the son, but also draws from a number of other Latin American musical styles.

Salsa is similar to Mambo in that both have a pattern of six steps danced over eight counts of music. The dances share many of the same moves. In Salsa, turns have become an important feature, so the overall look and feel are quite different form those of Mambo. Mambo moves generally forward and backward, whereas, Salsa has more of a side to side feel.

Salsa dancing is done on eight-beat music, with dancers moving on three beats, pausing for one beat, dancing for three beats, and pausing for one beat. The movement style is left-right-left-pause, then right-left-right-pause. During the pause in most salsa dancing some sort of flourish is utilized, be it a stomp of the foot, casting out the hand or kicking the lower leg. Salsa dancing is mostly a stationary dance, with little movement around the dance floor. Instead, dancers rely on the subtle movement of their legs and upper bodies to convey the energy of the dance.

Jive

A disciplined form of dance, which is always performed with a partner. Pairs tend to utilize large areas of the dance floor during routines. This form is very controlled and poised, allowing the dancers to flow with incredible grace.

Waltz dance born in the suburbs of Vienna and in the alpine region of Austria. As early as the seventeenth century, waltzes were played in the ballrooms of the Hapsburg court. The weller, or turning dances, were danced by peasants in Austria and Bavaria even before that time. Many of the familiar waltz tunes can be traced back to simple peasant yodeling melodies.

The waltz was also criticized on moral grounds by those opposed to its closer hold and rapid turning movements. Religious leaders almost unanimously regarded it as vulgar and sinful. Continental court circles held out obstinately against the waltz. In England, (a land of strict morals), the waltz was accepted even more slowly.

Bachata

Bachata is a form of music and dance that originated in the countryside and rural marginal neighborhoods of the Dominican Republic.  Its subjects are usually romantic; especially prevalent are tales of heartbreak.  The music is in 4/4 timing and is influenced by rumba and Son, while remaining of distinctive sound.

The creation of bachata dance was the brainchild of servants, who were the first to embrace this form of movement. The music was generally played after returning home from a hard day at work. Dancers performed to music created with the use of everyday items that were commonly found in the backyard, including garbage cans and fences. In some parts of the Dominican Republic, the term 'bachata' actually means trash, while others view the term to suggest a celebration or party. Another theory regarding the history behind bachata dance and music is that it came from the Italian Ballata, a formally popular music that once thrived many centuries ago in Italy.

Rumbamambo

The word Rumba is a generic term, covering a variety of names (i.e., Son, Danzon, Guagira, Guaracha, Naningo), for a type of West Indian music or dancing. The exact meaning varies from island to island. The word "rumba" comes from the verb "rumbear" which means going to parties, dancing, and having a good time.

There are two sources of the dances: one Spanish and the other African. Although the main growth was in Cuba, there were similar dance developments which took place in other Caribbean islands and in Latin America generally.

The Mambo dance originated in Cuba where there were substantial settlements of Haitians. In the back country of Haiti, the "Mambo" is a voodoo priestess, who serves the villagers as counselor, healer, exorcist, soothsayer, spiritual advisor, and organizer of public entertainment. However, there is not a folk dance in Haiti called the "Mambo."

The Mambo was originally played as any Rumba with a riff ending. It may be described as a riff or a Rumba with a break or emphasis on 2 and 4 in 4/4 time. Native Cubans or musicians without any training would break on any beat.

The key to Latinva Dance Fitness is not solely about the fun or the exercise; it is also about the level of concentration involved in the process. One must truly focus to memorize the sequence of steps in order to really gain all of its benefits…a great physical workout and an amazing mental challenge. It is a combination of these two key components that makes Latinva style a real success. Do it and feel like a Dance Star!

Zumba

Zumba is a fitness class that combines dance and fitness moves.  Inspired by Latin dance and music, Zumba uses a variety of styles in its routines, including Cumbia, Merengue, salsa, reggaeton, mambo, rumba, flamenco, and a hip hop. Music selections include both fast and slow rhythms to help tone and sculpt the body. You could burn between 350 to 900 calories PER class, BUT it all depends on how you exert yourself...  Below are many questions that I receive for my Zumba classes. However, the information below will help you in all type of exercise, aerobic classes.

Bollywood

Bollywood is one of the most famous dance styles from India using themes such as glamour, story telling and beautiful visualisation. This dance style derives from Indian movies and is a fusion of Indian classical dance, Indian folk dance, Bhangra, Hip Hop, Salsa, Jazz and Belly Dancing.

Bollywood dance style is basically variety of different songs from Bollywood movies. Each song/music is based on different situations and emotions. Bollywood is a lively form of music and dance that originated in the Punjab region in Southeast Asia and incorporates various music styles, including Bhangara. Many Bhangra lyrics reflect the long and often tumultuous history of the Punjab.  The dance includes moves from various styles, including classic Indian Dance, Bhangra, Arabic, as well as Latin dance. In recent years, the dance has acquired the pseudonym "Indian Bollywood," possibly in a nod to the proliferation of Indian movies in Western countries!

Contemporary

The changes seen in dance became very parallel with the changes people saw in modern and contemporary painting. Contemporary dance roots actually begin with modern dance’s argument against ballet’s upright posture and vertical movements. Modern dance pioneers like Mary Wigman focused on relaxing the ballerina by unfolding her body from her living, breathing center (For those of you who don’t speak artsy-fartsy, this means getting rid of some of the rules and constricting costumes associated with ballet. Many modern dancers wear simple clothing and dance in their bare feet).

Contemporary dancers like Martha Graham wanted to move even further from the rules and more toward improvisation. Rather than rejecting ballet as modern dance did, contemporary dance fused it with modern dance and redefined the “axis” of body movement.

As the information about contemporary dance history is increasingly available in time, the data about this chronological period is far larger than the one for modern dance history or ballet history. Also, it continues to increase and change everyday. So, the following text provides only a selection of very important figures or trends, recognized for their creative work. A huge part of this story will wait for later pages or discussions.

TODDLERS

(Age group 3 – 6 years)

The class promotes body awareness, music understanding and natural rhythm. We teach the kids basic body movements in time to familiar music so they begin to understand the relationship between the beat and the steps. Steps are given names that relate to their shape to aid memorization, for example ‘sun’, ‘tree’ and ‘twinkles’. The emphasis in the classes is always on fun and the atmosphere remains relaxed and non-competitive.

JUNIORS

(Age group 6 – 12 years)

These classes are a progression from the toddlers’ batch and so the kids are encouraged to think more about applying their bodies to the music. Rhythm and pace vary from dance to dance and so a little more discipline is required. Because of this the students benefit from an increased sense of satisfaction with their work. They begin to pick up the basics of some distinct dance forms, e.g. hip-hop, rock ’n’ roll and jazz, and to learn what makes them unique.

BEGINNERS

(Age group 12+)

In this class we identify different forms of dance and teach each one in turn, including jive, hip-hop, waltz and salsa. This ensures maximum variety for the students to keep them fully interested. Also, by focusing on the basics the classes represent a realistic challenge even for total beginners. Before the steps become too advanced for our students we are always moving on to a new form and a new routine. After just one batch students will be ready to take on the next level.

PRE-ELEMENTARY

This class involves longer routines that combine more than one of the forms learnt during the beginner class. Students have a greater say in which styles they focus on and the routine is designed accordingly. At this stage, props may be incorporated, e.g. a hat or chair, to make sure the students are always learning and progressing.

ELEMENTARY

Any students who have completed pre-elementary are welcome to attend this class. Here we start to specialize to give students an in-depth understand of one particular dance form, chosen with their preferences in mind. The routines are extended and developed with a view to live shows. Thus, we begin to educate our students about the wider aspects of performance, e.g. stage management and terminology. At this stage multiple props are used and choreography must be learned precisely.

INTERMEDIATE

By now we have prepared our students for performance at a professional level. As such they are expected to pick up routines quickly and accurately. These classes are tough but never over-demanding and students are always eager for the challenge. Routines continue to lengthen and usually involve a combination of more advanced forms. Dancers are expected to develop their own styles and ability to ‘feel’ the music. We also teach the basics of light and sound management.

CHOREOGRAPHY

The creative minds of students are explored and expanded as they start to devise their own choreography in the styles of Bollywood and Broadway. They are taught how to combine many different dance forms and how to get the best from individual dancers. This education enables students to create something both pleasing to watch and to perform. The result is a budding choreographer ready to take on the world of dance.

CORPORATE

These classes are tailor-made for corporate professionals and all busy working people. During each batch we teach the students routines with partner work, focusing on salsa, waltz and jive. The steps and songs used are never too quick as these classes are designed for maximum enjoyment and gentle exercise. We believe it is never too late to start dancing. Also, by introducing students to a relatively high level of technical proficiency we believe the benefits of these classes transfer to their professional lives too.

CORPORATE_ADVANCED

After a beginner batch, corporate students progress comfortably to a more advanced level. Here students are introduced to individual styles as well as more challenging partner routines. Just like any other student, our corporate dancers are welcome and encouraged to take to the stage and in these classes we teach them how, with a simple introduction to live performance techniques.

Jive

Jive is the perfect way to dance and have fun. It is also performed with a partner. The movements are usually simple but are set to a fast beat. This makes steps very rapid and stylized. Footwork and turns are both key to this form of dance.

Waltz

A disciplined form of dance, which is always performed with a partner. Pairs tend to utilize large areas of the dance floor during routines. This form is very controlled and poised, allowing the dancers to flow with incredible grace.

Salsa

Latin American dance originates from Central and South America. Among the numerous varieties are mambo, rumba, lambada and most famously salsa. All rhythmic movement takes place below the hip line, although there are lots of twirls, spins, lifts and throws involving the upper body. Latin dance forms require a lot of style and attitude.
